ruthie otero

Ruth Otero combines storytelling and musical comedy to reveal the unspoken struggles of the Puerto Rican mother/daughter relationship: Pepsi addiction, the clearance rack at Alexander's and of course, chancleta violence. Under Craig Carlisle's direction, Otero blends quick wit with fluid, physical comedy to take you on a rocket ride through scene after scene of her Nuyorican upbringing.

The play opens with Ruth, a performance artist from the Bronx, waiting backstage to start her one-woman show about how much she loves her life ever since moving 3,000 miles away from her mother. Unfortunately, Consuelo (Mom) shows up uninvited with Wilma, Ruth's Pepsi-addicted sister. They "help" by brightening up the set with tinsel and posters of dead Mexican movie stars. Ruth discovers this during the middle of her "peppy" opening number - which quickly turns into an "I Hate My Mother" medley. The sugar-sweet show about personal growth is abandoned and gloves-off family hilarity ensues.
